We're now 3 days away from our first game of the season...time to start talking about this week's game.

You can check out the game notes over here: http://goleathernecks.com/news/2015/8/3 ... 50039.aspx
Massey Ratings has us about a 10 point favorite, with a 76% chance of winning the game...most likely score of 34-24: http://www.masseyratings.com/game.php?gid=604223243
(then again, they had NDSU beating Montana by 11)...so, who knows.

First game of the season, it's pretty hard to tell how things are going to shake out. Who's going to step up from last year? What areas will we drop off in? The nice thing about this game though is that quite often the first game of the year is against a team that we're either expected to destroy (Valparaiso, Hampton, Butler, etc.) or a team that "should" destroy us (Arkansas, Toledo, etc.) so we often don't get a real great read on how the team is really going to perform against teams that are roughly at our skill level. I'd say that overall, we're pretty evenly matched with Eastern, so this should be a good test for both of us.

For those in the area but unable to make it to the game, you can listen to the game on the Leatherneck Sports Network: http://goleathernecks.com/news/2015/8/3 ... 54351.aspx
For those not in the area, you can listen online at http://www.wrmsfm.com/listen-online/ or using the TuneIn app and searching for WRMS.
If you have access to ESPN3/WatchESPN through your TV/Internet provider, the game will be available on that through apps on various streaming devices (Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, etc.) or online.

Weather at kickoff is currently projected to be ~89 degrees with ~47% humidity and essentially no chance of rain. Sunset will occur roughly 90 minutes after kickoff. So, it'll be a warm one, especially for those of us sitting on the East side, looking right into the sun.

Been a long offseason. Glad its almost game day!

Does EIU have a fan board Scott?

Interesting that EIU seems to be more highly regarded yet, WIU is picked to win.

From what I have been able to find EIU does not seem to have a fanboard. Seems kinda odd as many schools do and they have decent athletics and plenty of big names to make them relevant for fans.

Eastern does not have their own fan board. They have a few fairly regular posters over at AGS, but no forum of their own (see here:

As for the rankings between EIU and WIU, Massey (the ranking system that the prediction comes from) is pretty "high" on the MVFC in general, so they have us higher than Eastern (25th for us, 27th for Eastern). Eastern is 25th in the Coaches' poll and just into the "others receiving votes" section of the STATS (formerly Sports Network) FCS poll...Western is also in that section of that poll, but a bit further down the list. I do think that on a neutral field, EIU would have a slight edge over us, but on our home field, would be pretty close to even. We'll be tested...won't be an easy game...but I think we've realistically got about at 50/50 chance of coming away with a win.

Yikes I hope our chances are better than 50/50 if the Necks drop the home opener to EIU It is very likely they could be 0-3 before conference play begins.

Well, this is entirely based on what I see in the rankings. I haven't done any scouting on EIU, so I don't really know how they're going to match up with us. With it being the first game, I think predictions are kinda a shot in the dark when the teams are within a certain "distance" from each other.

If our defense is able to step up a bit from last year and our offense throws down a performance like they haven't missed a step from the end of last year...we'll win.
If the youth of our defense causes them to make "easy" mistakes and our offense struggles to find the rhythm for a good chunk of the game...we'll lose.

Conditioning could come into play as well, with the temperatures likely in the high 80's...whoever has the best conditioning and hydration is going to have a distinct advantage.

You just never know until you see them on the field, but I like our chances.
