Our defense should do really well in this game. Bye week hasn't put up any points so far this season.

But seriously though....thoughts on where we're at so far this season?
I pretty much expected that we'd be 1-2; was hoping for better, but not surprising.

Defense is (for the most part) doing much better than I thought they would be doing at this point. Offense was really starting to scare me, but with the new addition of Watson back into the mix, it looks like we finally have something of a running game that should allow us to open up the passing game (which we saw last weekend against CCU). As has been said by quite a few people, it seems like kick coverage has gotten pretty lax. Hopefully they can take this extra time to shore up that aspect a bit.

Stats-wise, so far this season...
(hard to compare even last season vs this season, since we had 2 Pioneer League teams and 2 Big 10 teams in OOC last year)

Offense:

QB Trenton Norvell - Had significant problems connecting with anyone in the game at Illinois. Did ok in the first game vs EIU, but seemed better in the game at CCU (could have been also because of the improved running game...less QB pressure). 109.03 passing efficiency so far this season, 587 yard passing and 3 TDs. Per game passing average of 190/game so far is higher than the 181.6 from his freshman year, but lower than his 252.9 last year.

RB Nikko Watson - 156 yards (in one game had more yards than the #2 and #3 RBs have had all season so far combined) and 2 TDs (equaling the total of all the other RBs this season.

RB Steve McShane - true freshman has shown flashes of quickness/speed at finding holes and flying through them. Still has a ways to go to be as good as the similarly-sized and style JC Baker, but has a lot of promise. 106 net yards so far this season.

WR Lance Lenoir - has had 2 100+ yard receiving games so far and caught 1 TD. Had some brilliant moments on kick returns in the first game vs EIU, but has been shut down significantly the the following two games.

WR Joey Borsellino - had over 100 yards and a TD against Coastal Carolina, although wasn't able to do much in the first two games. I feel like with the addition to our running game, it's opened up more mid-range passing options (10-15 yards) which the staff has taken advantage of to allow Borsellino to make a few more catches.

Defense:

Brett Taylor, Eddy Holtschlag, David Griffith, and Timothy Smith each have one interception, with Taylor's being a 42-yard pick-6.

LB Taylor currently leads the team with 28 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble and the previously mentioned INT.
DB Aaron Diggs has 25 total tackles with 2 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery

Special Teams:

K/P Nathan Knuffman has punted 11 times with an average of 38.73 per punt, long of 48 and 3 inside the 20. More troubling is the fact that 2 of his punts so far have been blocked (as well as 1 FG, and I think 1 XP attempt). I feel like part of the issue is his front line allowing defender through, but also it seems like his kicks, in many cases, are pretty low and easy to block.

So, the team appears to be getting better in many aspects, but obviously has much to still work on.

In (nearly) completely unrelated news....here's a scarf:

Specifically, a "season" scarf that my wife is making me. The way it works is, you pick your team's primary and secondary colors. For each points you score, you do a row of your primary color, for each points the opponent scores, a row of the secondary color. From right to left, so far she has the Eastern game (a few rows of gold, big block of purple, two rows of gold, then another block of purple)...the big block of gold is the Illinois game, and so far she's a couple of scores into the CCU game...that one was very back and forth, should stripe nicely. By the end of the season, you have a scarf that you can wear (since it'll be winter) and that can remind you of football season all winter long.

Looks like most conference teams have a bye this week - I guess the good news is that we'll all be the same level of tired by the end of the season. Isn't that actually kind of unusual, though? I thought they most generally were scattered about more.

Nice scarf Scott - be nicer if there was a bunch more purple in there, eh? ;)

They usually are scattered around a lot more. It was apparently just a quirk of the conference schedule the way it's set up this year that the last 8 weeks of the season are all conference games, every weekend, no bye weeks. So pretty much everyone who was able to fit their bye week in as late as possible...last weekend of the non-conference games (this weekend), and the few that couldn't (SDSU and SIU) put in their bye weeks last weekend.

This week, the only conference games are:
Robert Morris at South Dakota State
Liberty at Southern Illinois (could be a good game, and a good test to see where SIU is at going into next week).

Scarf - thanks...I figure that once conference play starts, I should get a lot more purple in there. Hopefully enough to balance out the big gold block on the other end...maybe the game at Indiana State will do that.

Well, I did pretty good with my prediction of what Nikko would do. ;)

I think we have enough talent and athleticism and coaching to end up with 6 wins.

Special teams is hurting us, probably cost us the Coastal game, will not be surprised if it costs us another game somewhere throughout the season.

Still think WIU is not a great 4th quarter team, also, never know from week to week what version of the 2015 Leatherneck team you are going to see. Consistency is not there.

I was optimistic that we would be 2-1 right now, but 1-2 is the reality and really is probably where we should be.

That being said, we are undefeated in conference play and there is no reason to think we can't compete for a MVFC championship. NDSU is not as strong, and ISUr is ridiculously overrated (got smoked by IOWA, beat an awful MEAC team, barely squeaked by a EIU team we dominated) yet they are ranked high.

Also Scott I concur with your prediction, no way we lose to BYE.

I agree. After seeing ISU play against Iowa and Eastern IL, I think we have a good chance against them. It's their homecoming, so it should be a loud crowd, but I think there'll be a lot of Western people there as well (I've already got my tickets for my dad and I).

According to Massey, we're essentially at a 50% chance or better to win the games against SIU (63%), USD (79%), YSU (60%), and ISUb (49%), and I'd agree that all of those games are very winnable if we play like we did against Coastal (or better, if special teams can get things figured out). The other games are at UNI (22%), at ISUr (19%), at NDSU (12%), and against SDSU (37%). I think that UNI will be tough (I think they're better than people are giving them credit for); NDSU will obviously be VERY difficult (at their place, they're down a bit, but they're still VERY good...I think much better than CCU); ISUr is like the opposite of UNI...they're not as good as people are giving them (maybe residual from last year) credit for, at least not based on what I've seen so far; SDSU will probably be tougher than everyone except NDSU this year...even though the game is at home, the crowd will probably be tiny unless we're in the playoff hunt. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see SDSU go undefeated in the regular season. Biggest test for them now is going to be NDSU, who they have at home fairly early in the season (same weekend as our homecoming game), otherwise they're favored in all the rest of their games.

Personally, I (maybe optimistically) think that we'll win the games against SIU, USD, YSU, and ISUb and that will pull out a win against either ISUr or maybe UNI and finish the season at 6-5.

That October 24 game at Illinois State will be on Comcast Sports Net-Chicago as well as ESPN3.

As usual, the Western Alumni Association will be serving a pre-game meal at their tent in the Tailgating area. More info available here:

Illinois State sold out their first game, so fans may want to act fast to get tickets.

My dad and I will be in general admission section 123. I hope to see a huge mob of purple in that vicinity.
