There was a 3 minute stretch in 3rd quarter (9:24 - 6:21) during which the teams scored a combined 27 points. Not a single foul was called during that short stretch. After scoring that last 3ptr, ORU had to call an immediate 30 second timeout and bring in a couple of subs for relief. Without a doubt, this style of play is quite a bit closer to the one James Naismith had in mind when he invented the game back in 1891:
At Springfield YMCA, Naismith struggled with a rowdy class which was confined to indoor games throughout the harsh New England winter and thus was perpetually short-tempered. Under orders from Dr. Luther Gulick, head of Springfield YMCA Physical Education, Naismith was given 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction": Gulick demanded that it would not take up much room, could help its track athletes to keep in shape[8] and explicitly emphasized to "make it fair for all players and not too rough."[6]

Wow, have we totally messed up James' game or what?

Embrace the pace of the race.
So, what you're saying is it's supposed to be the "big kid" version of "go outside and run around the house until you're tired".

More or less you got it. Current game is too physical and too many stoppages of play. In James' game, dribbling was not allowed (first introduced in 1901). One rule change they might consider in future would be to limit the amount of dribbles to say 3 so that passing becomes more of an emphasis and those ugly player control charging fouls become less common.ST_Lawson wrote:So, what you're saying is it's supposed to be the "big kid" version of "go outside and run around the house until you're tired".
