Lindenwood's Record: The Lions are 3-5 overall this season and 2-2 in the OVC. They started off the season with three losses to then FBS #22 Kansas (38-4), FCS #9 Central Arkansas (34-13), and Missouri State (28-14). They then ran all over non-scholarship St. Thomas, winning 64-0. In the OVC, they won at Eastern Illinois (28-25), lost against Tennessee State (24-20), beat Charleston Southern (29-14), then lost at Gardner-Webb last weekend (42-35). This weekend's game will be Homecoming for Lindenwood.

History: WIU has played the Lions once in the two teams history. Despite being located fairly close, Lindenwood has only recently moved up to the DI level, so last year's matchup with them was our first. Many of you probably remember that that was the game where WIU was up 31-14 at halftime, but pretty much fell apart in the second half, eventually falling 43-40: https://goleathernecks.com/sports/footb ... core/13319

Players to Know:
  • Junior QB Nate Glantz has a 129.75 rating with 11 TDs, 7 INTS, and a 179.63 passing ypg average. He has also run for 23.5 ypg with 3 TDs.
  • Senior RB Cortezz Jones averages 55.63 ypg on the ground with 5 TDs.
  • Freshman RB Steve Hall is averaging 52 ypg with 1 TD and was awarded the BS/OVC Co-Freshman of the Week last week.
  • Junior WR Jeff Caldwell is the top receiver, picking up just over 97 ypg and 9 TDs with a 22.91 yard per catch average.
  • Senior LB Vincent King leads the team in tackles with 77 total (46 solo), and 7.5 tackles for loss. He was awarded the BS/OVC Defensive Player of the Week last week.
  • Sophomore DL Donnie Wingate has 4.5 sacks in his 18 total tackles, and 1 forced fumble.
  • Junior DB Jayden Patrick has 2 interceptions and 21 total tackles.
  • Aussie Sophomore Punter Patrick Turner averages 38 yards per punt with 2 over 50 yards.
  • Junior Kicker Logan Seibert is 13 for 16 on FG attempts: 6/6 in the 20-29 range, 5-5 from 30-39, and 2-5 from 40-49, with a long of 46 and 1 blocked kick.
Local-ish Players on UTM's Roster:
  • Since they're in the STL area, they have a number of players that I'd normally consider "local", being from STL or the suburbs, so I'm not going to list them all
  • Sophomore WR John Anthony is from Chicago
  • Freshman DB Sam Owens is from Decatur, IL
  • Freshman DL Jack Stump is from Morton, IL
  • Senior OL Ethan Johnson is from Normal, IL
  • Freshman OL Nate Compere is from Crystal Lake, IL (NW Chicago suburbs)
  • Junior TE Abe Haerr is from Palmyra, MO (between Quincy and Hannibal on the MO side of the river)
  • Freshman DL Chris Abihudi is from Carpentersville, IL (far west "fringe" Chicago suburbs)
  • Freshman DL Andrew Zook is from Yorkville, IL (just a bit out from Oswego in the Chicago area)
Predictions: Massey Ratings says we have a 37% chance of winning this game, with a predicted score of 34-28: https://masseyratings.com/game.php?gid=940318268
For reference, we had a 34% chance against Tennessee Tech last weekend. I'm hoping that the members of the team that are still around from last year will treat this as something of a "revenge" game and get the new guys fired up to even up the series with Lindenwood. They're only about 3 hours away from Macomb, which means that they're now the closest of our conference-mates. Let's get a good crowd down there and spoil their homecoming game. We have a handful of players from the St. Louis region too, so I'm thinking we'll see a good "friends and family of players" crowd also.

One of the biggest late October games for WIU Football since 2017...defense needs to continue to improve and Lamb needs to continue to be Lamb.  Would be big to see Cam Smith go off.

My wife and I will be doing the game.  Sat. nite, she and a friend will be seeing Usher in concert.  I will instead celebrate a 28-24 Neck's victory at a pub to be named later.
Embrace the pace of the race.

Anyone else think we should be make adjustments on Defense and maybe try some of the other players?  Just curious.

What's with the chain gang's line to gain signal marker being just a pole?  They have the blaze orange at the rear but not in the front. Maybe I'm cynical but it certainly makes it harder to see what is needed to get the 1st down.

Turnovers killed them. Apparently there is just something about Lindenwood, hopefully they can break it next year. Anybody that saw the game was the officiating sketchy? BJ and Doc were making it seem like WIU was getting shafted, but then again they seem to always complain about the officials. That is one thing I don't like about listening to them is the constant complaints about the officials.

The 2 late fumbles by Lanier and Lamb were killers.  The holding penalty on what appeared to be the go ahead TD looked sketchy but by all means the Necks had been moving the ball at will and there was no reason they shouldn't have scored the game winner there.  Even after the penalty.  All in all 700 yards of offense should win you a game.  Very up and down this year and run defense continues to be a big issue.

FWIW Lindenwood's stadium and facilities looked to be top notch.  WIU has to recruit against that year in and year out without comparable infastructure?  Seems to be very tough.

I was watching it on ESPN+ and there were a few things that were questionable, but I wouldn't say it was excessively so. The announcers on the TV (who were trying to be somewhat impartial but you could tell were Lindenwood people) were talking about that one catch fairly late in the game that we made/almost made that we challenged. It was called a catch by one official, then called off by another official that was quite a ways away. There wasn't anything on the video to really overturn it either way, but because the official called it "no catch", we didn't pick up those yards.

Good teams don't leave things in the hands of judgement calls by the officials though. We need to figure things out on the defense and hold on to the ball better. Offensively, we're doing great, and if we were just able to stop Lindenwood on a couple of those drives, we'd have won.
