Yea, 3 games left against 3 very tough teams. If we somehow win out (won't happen if we play anything like today), then we'll make it. Win 2 out of 3 and we have a VERY slim outside chance. Win 1 or 0 and of course...not this year. After today...I'm not holding my breath.

It was not a good day for our offense. We had 13 first downs and 260 total yards.

Norvell threw for 154 yards with 98 of those coming in the second half.

Youngstown has the nation's 2nd best passing defense.

Youngstown won the time-of-possession 35:45 to 24:15.

In looking at the Youngstown roster, Coach Bo Pelini brought a lot of former Nebraska players with him.

Good crowd of 2,610 considering the weather. It rained all morning and continued into the first quarter of the game. Following that, there was a cool mist for the rest of the game.

For comparison purposes, here is a look at the attendance at some other games in the area:
Monmouth College had 500 for their home game with Grinnell.
Quincy University had 2,512 for their home game with Truman State.
#3 Illinois State had 7,498 for their home game with Indiana State.

Wow...really disappointed with this one. I followed most of the game on gamecast, and watched the final few minutes. WIU looked completely out of sync on that last offensive series, and even the defensive series preceding. The weather sucked...but it sucked for YSU just the same. I thought WIU was moving in the right direction heading into this game, but this was a step back. Hopefully it's a kick in the mouth and the team gets headed back in the right direction again. The two minutes I watched was extremely disappointing.

Question for the coaching staff and yes still bitter about Ziegenbein's illegal formations. The last two weeks we've faced two of the best end rushes and have had plenty of trouble. Ziggy is cheating back to get an edge and it cost us big-time twice. Now maybe it changes nothing in the end, but took away the chance. Considering the second one kept us from being in the redzone down 2 in the 4th.

Anyways, why is he getting down in a 3 point? I'd like my tackles upright on passing downs. Especially against speed and strength and especially if the tackle is 6-8 and takes him a beat longer to get out of his stance.

They didn't play well enough as a team to win and there were plenty of other issues, but this one keeps lingering with me.

IMO - Rebuilding football while competing in the MVFC is no easy matter. I think the last two games have proven that the offensive line is still a work in progress but on there way to being very good. Nikko has been knicked up lately too. There was never a point during the game yesterday when I felt "comfortable" with the lead or what was going on on the field. Just couldn't get things or keep things going. The entire 1st half it seemed was played in WIU territory. No blocked punts but no long punts either. (Scifris was sure a weapon wasn't he!) Lucky to walk of the field down 6. Better field position the second half but just could not get pressure on the YSU quarterback who picked our secondary apart at times in crucial 3rd down situations. Wondered what the logic was with WIU's first possession of the 2nd half with the long passes but this really set up the short and medium passes which led to the score the 3rd quarter which in retrospect makes sense. The entire second half it seemed like the offense was looking at a 3rd and long situation against an excellent YSU secondary. But yet, the Necks still had a chance to win.

So this year so far feels like when I was dating a girl that was a bit unsure of the direction our relationship was going. Even though I knew, she was a bit "on again off again" when it came to being serious I hung in there. There were nights/dates/weeks when things were great and we were making head way with our relationship, and then there were nights thrown in-between where I just wanted to throw up my hands and yell, "WTF, I thought we had things going!" Eventually I won the war and she has put up with my "Leatherneck" antics for over 40 years. Time, patience, perseverance, intestinal fortitude, they all fit this situation. Every one is trying to claw their way to the top. You get knocked down, you just have to claw your way back up. 3 points, 6 inches, no matter how things went yesterday, the Necks were that close to another W. Enough said! ;) jc

The tone for this game was set on opening drive from our own 25 yard line:
1st Down: Nikko up the gut for 1 yd
2nd Down: Nikko up the gut for 1 yd (exact same look, exact same result)
3rd Down: Errant pass

From where I sit, our running game is so predictable, no way in hell can it be used to set up the pass or vice versa.
Embrace the pace of the race.

Youngstown State has the nation's 2nd best passing defense.

When did it become an established practice at Western to blare that loud recorded music from the north end zone speakers between every play ???? And Taylor Swift songs ???? Good grief!

It got annoying very fast!

There were many times that we could not hear the Western band because of that loud music being played at the same time.

The band was told that "the box" wanted prerecorded music most of the time when they had the ball and the band when on defense. Don't know if that was a noise issue thing with the offense having trouble hearing the plays or what, but that's what was requested by the people in charge.

YSU pass very good but the same offensive philosophy. Rely only on Lenoir and Borsellino. Ignore 2/3 of the field. Good defenses will take away our only 2 choices in pass game. Pretty easy to defend this passing game now for teams who have a blueprint. Doesn't look like coaches have any intention of changing though. Can't imagine why any TE would every want to play in this offense when they are ignored. Funny how many successful offenses use them...

Norvell really seems to struggle seeing the middle of the field. We had plenty of receivers open in the middle all day. The screen play worked the one time we ran it, and we never tried it again. We just seem so close, but we just can't over the hump this year.
